Flanking the ascending Virgin (Gala) in Dali's "Assumpta Corpuscularia Lapislazulina" is a massive storm of rhinoceros horns -- some dematerializing -- meant to symbolize Dali's fascination with the mathematics of the logarithmic curve, of which rhino horns are a naturally occurring example. However, Dali's leading patron once remarked that the rhino horns in this large painting were an ugly distraction from an otherwise beautiful work.
